Are you looking for a new career? Maybe the perfect career? Now, more than ever, people want to find the work they were meant to do, but they don’t know if it’s really possible, especially in today’s tough economic times.
Here are nine steps to identifying the perfect career for you:
1. What are you good at?
2. What interests you?
3. What motivates you and is most important to you?
4. How much money would you realistically like to earn?
5. What level of responsibility do you want?
6. Where do you want your ideal job to be located?
7. What special knowledge would you like to include in your career?
8. What kind of work environment do you prefer?
9. What types of people do you like to work for and with?
When we’re young, we often make our career decisions based on whether the job is interesting (#2) and if we can make a lot of money (#4).
Over time, we realize that those two factors alone don’t bring us satisfaction and fulfillment in our work. We care more about the kind of environment we’re in and the people we work with, and we want to do something that uses our gifts and abilities to make a difference.
Don’t rush it. Take your time in answering these nine questions. And feel free to ask others (your spouse, friends, co-workers you can trust) how they’d answer these questions for you. Sometimes, others see things in us that we can’t see in ourselves.
With a little time and effort, you can identify the career that is right for you!
